House flag, Zapata Marine Service

The house flag of Zapata Marine Service, Great Yarmouth.

A white rectangular flag with a blue letter 'Z' in the centre and formed of a blue square with two white bends. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. The logo is on a double-sided panel of plain-weave polyester. A rope and toggle are attached and there are eyelets in the hoist which is stencilled '4' HOUSE FLAG'.

The Zapata Marine Service was part of a larger US oil and gas conglomerate based in Houston, Texas which also owned oil rig supply vessels and a fishing fleet. The company was started in 1953 as Zapata Petroleum Inc. by George Bush senior and J. Hugh Liedtke. The logo was reputedly based on the ‘Z’ from a stencil set belonging to the daughter of one of the directors. Profits were adversely affected by the slump in oil prices during the 1980’s and the company diversified. Zapata Gulf Marine merged with Tidewater Marine in 1992. The Zapata Corporation today is mainly an internet and electronic commerce business.
