Jug

Earthenware jug, transfer-printed in mauve with hand-painted decoration on the rim of sprays of red and blue flowers in foliage between blue lines. Under the lip, a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) based on the engraving by J. Chapman, published in December 1798 (see PAD3884). It is inscribed 'England expects every Man to do his duty', 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON/Born Septr 29 1758 Died Octr 21 1805/Aged 47'. On one side of the jug, a battle plan of Trafalgar inscribed 'Plan of the Battle off Trafalgar in which action the intrepid Nelson fell covered with glory and renown Octr 21 1805', and below 'Admls taken Villeneauve C. in Chief. Don Ignatio Maria d. Avila (since dead) Vice Admiral & Don Baltazar Cisneros Rear Admiral. The Enemy had 33 Ships to our 27 the action lasted 3 Hours when 19 Ships of the Line struck in which were 3 Flag Officers.' On the other side is a list of the British fleet in van and rear columns. 'The order in which the Ships of the British Squadrons attacked the Combined [fleets of] France & Spain Oct 21 1805. NB It will be remembered the Lord Nelson with the Van broke the enemy's line at the 10th Ship & Adml Collingwood with the Rear at the 19th'.
