An earthenware jug with a stone-coloured glaze, transfer-printed in black with a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) inscribed below 'ADMIRAL LORD NELSON/Born Septr 29 1758 Died Octr 21 1805 Aged 47' above'England expects every Man to do his duty'. On one side of the jug in brown, a battle plan of Trafalgar: 'Plan of the Battle off Trafalgar in which action the intrepid Nelson fell covered with glory and renown Octr 21 1805', 'Admls taken Villeneauve Cr in Chief Don Ignatio Morea d'Avila (since dead) Vice Admiral & Don Baltazar Cisneros, Rear Admiral. The Enemy had 33 Ships to our 27 the action lasted 3 Hours when 19 Ships of the Line struck in which were 3 Flag Officers.' On the other side, a list of the British fleet: 'The order in which the ships of the British squadrons attacked the combined fleets of France and Spain Oct 21 1805', 'It will be remembered that Lord Nelson with the Van broke the Enemy's line at the 10th ship & Adm Collingwood with the Rear at the 12th'. The neck of the jug has a hand-painted red border with floral reserves, maroon and yellow bands and blue dashes. Maroon decoration is painted on the moulded handle.
