Small pocketbook journal by Joseph Gerrard Stewart covering a voyage to Port Jackson in Australia on board the NORTHAMPTON (1866), 14 October 1879 to 9 January 1880. The last pages are taken up by a letter to the writer's parents dated 'Candelo New South Wales, March 10 1880'. The content includes a vast amount of information about daily life onboard, the people he knew, how they celebrated Christmas and their food allowances. Other information relates to disease, childbirth and the high mortality rate of babies during the journey and their funerals.
