Imperial German pilot flag

Imperial German pilot flag 1867-1919 pattern. It is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist and is machine stitched, the upper and lower edges are selvedges. The civil ensign with its three horizontal stripes of black, white and red is placed within a white border. It belonged to merchant officer John Fenton. His apprentices indenture is dated 20 June 1903, Liverpool, his master's certificate 9 October 1911. He made his last voyage as third mate on the 'Mount Stewart' to Australia in 1923.
