Plate
Earthenware mess plate, transfer-printed in blue. In the centre is shown a warship under sail wearing French flags, inscribed on a ribbon above 'ROYAL NAVY' and below 'MESS NO 13, the whole surrounded by roses, thistles and shamrocks, naval trophies below. The plate has a border of geometric designs, laurels and chain cable with four vignettes of shipping. The retailers details are printed on the reverse: 'FLETCHER & MILLER CHINA, GLASS & GENERAL HARDWARE WAREHOUSE BUTCHER ST. PORTSEA.' Before 1907 naval messes had to buy their own crockery and such items were manufactured for this market.
