Walsh Island Dockyard & Engineering Works, Newcastle, N.S.W.

A blue leather bound album with a weak spine, containing 28 prints glued in, each measuring 203mm x 152mm with captions. Also a letterpress introduction is pasted to the front free end paper. The album contains images of The Walsh Island Dockyard & Engineering Works, Newcastle. The following ship portraits are also included in the album: Birubi (1927),a pilot steamer, Dilga (1920), a cargo steamer, and the passenger ferry's Koompartoo (1922) and Kooroongaba (1921). According to Wikipedia, The dockyard was eventually abandoned in 1933 after the great depression and was dismantled and relocated to the new State Dockyard at Dyke End, Carrington, which in turn closed in 1987.

10. “Passenger Ferry ‘Koompartoo’ for Sydney Ferries Ltd.”. At a quayside, port ahead of beam, no sign of passengers. A launch is alongside.
11. “Launch of Pilot Steamer ‘Birubi’”. Bow-on. The vessel is already afloat, with the debris of the launching tackle in the foreground. It carries a number of flags and is being nudged by the tug ‘Moruya’
12. “Pilot Steamer ‘Birubi’ Newcastle Pilot Service”. Port ahead of beam, some way from the shore. A large church in the background.
