HMS Crescent (1892)

This album contains deck scenes and interiors of HMS Crescent (1892) at the time she was commanded by Captain HRH the Duke of York (later King George V) from 8th June 1898-26th August 1898. Also included are photographs of the Duchess of York, Princes Edward and George and Princess Mary, group photographs of officers and ratings and ephemera. In 1898 HMS Crescent was employed on particular service, cruising and exercising around Ireland and Scotland. In July she joined the Channel Squadron at Kirkwall. She was then detached to act as a guard ship for Cowes week; she then returned to Portsmouth when the Duke of York came ashore –the end of his active service afloat.

The 21 loose photographs relate to the career of Engineer Captain Frank S Moss RN who served in HMS Crescent with the Duke of York. Moss was promoted to Assistant Engineer Lieutenant 1892 and served in HMS Dryad (1893) and HMS Tamar (1897). In 1896 he was promoted to Engineer Lieutenant and served in HMS Bulwark from 1901-1904, HMS President from 1904-1907, HMS Juno (1895) from 1907-1909 and was in command of HMS Liverpool (1909)from 1910 -1913. In 1913 he was appointed to base ship HMS Vivid to assist Engineer Rear Admiral with ships buildings by contractors and for charge of Record Parties. During the 1914-18 war he served in HMS Swiftsure (1903) and was promoted to Captain in 1920.
