Album relating to the career of Captain R P Selby DSO (1894 – 1976), part 1

A bound green cloth board covered photograph album (which has come off).

This album chronicles Captain Selby’s naval career from July 1911 to September 1918. It contains photographs of Dartmouth and Royal Naval ships including HMS Lion (1910), HMS Calypso (1917) and HMS Ceres (1917). There are also photographs of the battle of Jutland, May 1916 and group photographs of both officers and ratings. Ephemera includes telegram re Jutland, a Munition Handbook and theatre programmes. Roger Prideaux Selby was born 14 October 1894 and after Dartmouth entered the Royal Navy as a Midshipman in 1912. He was promoted to Sub lieutenant 1914, Lieutenant 1916, Commander 1929 and placed on the retired list with rank of Captain, 1944. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for services during the Normandy landings. Captain Selby married Elizabeth May Stirling in Edinburgh 5th February 1919.

The majority of photographs have been captioned by Captain Selby.
