Royal Indian Marine Gunboat Lawrence (1886), circa 1914-1916

A brown photograph album with worn covers and 23 leaves.

The photographs in this album dated predominantly from 1914-16 when RIM Lawrence (1886) was operating in the Middle East but there are a few earlier photographs dating from 1900. Ships include RIM Northbrook (1907) and HMS Alert (1894). Places include the Persian Gulf, Muscat, Basrah, Bushire and Portsmouth. There are many photographs of ships’ officers and Arabs.

The Royal Indian Marine paddle gunboat RIM Lawrence was launched by Laird’s in 1886 and requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1914. She was renamed Old Lawrence in 1918, Canning in 1919 and sold circa 1922. During WWI she was employed in the Middle East against the Turks, engaged in the blockade of the Shatt-al-Arab and searching dhows for arms.
