The entry of the Ottoman Empire into the First World War on 29th October 1914 threatened British interests in the Middle East. British and Indian troops were sent to Mesopotamia to protect the oil fields near Basra. As well as war casualties the climate was extremely hot and humid and sickness was rife, British Red Cross launches were used to transport the sick and wounded to hospital ships and hospitals. This album contains photographs of hospital ships and launches operating on the Tigris and Euphrates during the campaign against the Turks. Vessels include: HM1, HM7, HP2 (1916), PS3, PS52, PS58, T15 and Fly class river gunboat (1915), pendant F1, Ayrshire, Cawnpore, Fife and Clackmanshire, Fryer, Glasgow, Suffolk No. 2, The Lindsay Wood, The Tom Taylor, Tyne. Topographical scenes include Basra, Amara, Kut al Amara and Baghdad.
