Rear-Admiral Edward Hilary Rymer Collection

This is a cloth-bound album (repaired), containing 269 prints, mainly small snapshot size, but some larger. The album is one of four (ALB0929-0932) and documents Rymer's career during the period 1904-10. As well as ship portraits, shipboard scenes, and topographical views, a number of prints relate to the following events: Russo-Japanese War of 1904 (Siege of Port Arthur), visit of Viceroy Weh to HMS Glory, Nanking, 1904, Henley Regatta 1908. The majority of the album was compiled from scenes on the China Station (particularly Wei-Hai-Wei).

The album includes the following vessels: HMS Glory (1899), HMS Algerine (1895), HMS Vengeance (1899), HMS Centurion (1892), Hai Tien (1897), HMS Terrible (1895), HMS Exe (1903), B9 (1906), HMS Duke of Edinburgh (1904), HMS Kent (1901).

Rear Admiral Edward Hilary Rymer (1873-1952) was born in Eltham, Kent on 6 October 1873. He entered the Navy in 1887. In February 1889, as a naval cadet, he was posted to the Bellerophon and after service as a midshipman was commissioned lieutenant 1 October 1895. On 19 February 1904 after completing the gunnery course in HMS Excellent at Portsmouth, he became first lieutenant of the battleship HMS Glory (Captain Walter Stopford), Vice-Admiral Sir Gerard Noel’s flagship on the China Station until promoted to commander 30 June 1906. On 15 December 1909 Rymer was appointed second-in-command of HMS Kent again on the China Station until promoted to captain 31 December 1913. On 1 December 1914 he was appointed Naval Attache to the British Embassy in Tokyo and remained there until March 1918 when he commanded the cruiser Donegal and from February 1919 the light cruiser Dublin both based at Devonport. Rear Admiral Rymer was placed on the retired list 13 July 1922. His advance to rear admiral was a retirement promotion and he subsequently worked for the Admiralty as a Nautical Assessor 1926-7.
