Photograph 3: ‘Benin’. Donaldson served in HMS St George (1892) as a sub lieutenant in 1897 when she took part in the punitive expedition against the king of Benin. Benin City was taken 18th February 1897 and this photograph shows men, both Royal Navy and African, standing in front of captured trophies including an elephant’s tusk.
