Photograph album relating to the Royal Navy career of Captain Andrew Johnstone, D.S.O, RN

This is a photograph album containing 250 photographs pasted in, or loose, and captioned.

Contents: This album contains photographs relating to Captain Andrew Johnstone’s naval career between 1903 and 1918. Places represented include Malta, Greece, Cape Town and Oundle school. Ships include HMS Venerable (1899) in 1903, HMS Orwell (1898), HMS Exmouth (1901) in 1906 and Kenilworth Castle (1904) survivors in 1918. There are also photographs of HMS Montagu (1901) before and after she ran aground on Shutter Rock, Lundy Island, 1906, and HMS Northbrook (1907) in 1915. Johnstone was serving on HMS Exmouth (1901) when that ship was involved in salvage attempts.
There are group photographs of officers, Admiral Sir Arthur Knyvet Wilson V.C., King Edward VII and dog and some family photographs.

See ALB1021 for an outline of Captain Johnstone’s career. He served on HMS Venerable (1899) between 1902-05 and on HMS Exmouth (1901) between 1905-7. He commanded HMS Bee (1915) from 30/1/1916 – 5/12/1917.
