Photograph album relating to the Royal Navy career of Captain Andrew Johnstone, D.S.O, RN

Contents: This album relates to Captain Johnstone’s career from 1912 – 1922. Ships include HMS Thunderer (1911) and at Dagenham Dock in June 1912, (collision with) HMS Jackal (1911), HMS Northbrook (1907) in 1915, and HMS Sword Dance (1918 in 1919). Places include Lamlash in 1913, Muscat and Basrah in 1914-15. There are also many photographs of officers and crew.

Captain Johnstone was promoted to Lieutenant 1907, Lt Cdr 1915, Commander 1920 and Captain (retired) 3 May 1931. He commanded the following ships: HMS Bee (1916-17), HMS Humber (1919), HMS Moth (1919-21), HMS Snapdragon (1922-24), HMS Bluebell (1927-29). He was Commander and then Assistant King’s Harbour Master, Portsmouth Dockyard in 1930. Captain Johnstone was awarded the Distinguished Service Order while fighting the Bolsheviks in North Russia in 1919 – citation reads, ‘for distinguished service in command of HMS Humber (1913) – he fought his ship frequently under heavy fire with great gallantry’.
