Full hull model; Plank-on-frame; Stretcher
Scale: 1:12. Stretcher from a contemporary full hull plank on frame model of an eight-oared whaleboat circa 1870. The model illustrates a double-ended ‘whaler' hull and is built in clinker construction, i.e. with overlapping planks fixed to steamed frames. It is equipped with four pairs of rowlocks mounted on the gunwale and eight oars (one missing), a rudder complete with a gunmetal or brass yoke (rope steering lines missing) and a mast thwart for rigging a single mast for sailing. In the stern sheets, there is a backboard inscribed with the letters ‘HMC’ which would suggest that this was one of the many cutters and whalers as used by the Coastguard Service.
