Service vessel; Whaleboat
Scale: 1:12. A full hull model of an eight-oared whaleboat (circa 1870) made entirely in wood with metal fittings, varnished or polished and painted in realistic colours. The hull is made plank-on-frame and clinker-built, the exterior of which is unpainted wood with white strakes, black wash strakes and unpainted gunwales. The interior hull is painted cream below the thwarts, white above with a black-painted connecting frame between the two surfaces. Fittings and equipment include four pairs of rowlocks mounted on the gunwale, four thwarts with whit-painted ends, a rudder complete with a gunmetal or brass yoke (rope steering lines missing) and a mast thwart for rigging a single mast for sailing. In the stern sheets, there is a backboard inscribed with the letters ‘HMC’.
