A Sledge Team on the King Edward VII, Plateau

No 14. from Players cigarette cards, second series of 25, 'Polar Exploration'. The front depicts four men manhauling a sledge captioned 'Players Cigarettes A SLEDGE TEAM'. Reverse: 'A Sledge Team on the King Edward VII, Plateau. The final stages of the journey over the icy wastes leads across a hugh snow-capped plateau for over 300 miles. The altitude at which Capt. Scott and his companions travelled reached 11, 000 feet above the level of the sea. A cold wind blows constantly from the South, turning one's beard into a solid mass of ice. Day after day, week after week, the explorers plodded on, with nothing to vary the monotany but the glittering ice crystals, which sparkle with a strange beauty when the sun is not hidden by the cirro-stratus cloud that so often obtains in this high Southern latitude.'
