Unidentified couple posing in front of the Mermaid sculpture, Copenhagen, Denmark.
An unidentified couple posing in front of the Mermaid sculpture, Copenhagen, Denmark. The photograph was taken during one of the 'Kungsholm' (1966) cruises. The lady is wearing an elegant and expensive outfit in the style of Jackie Kennedy, with a pillbox hat perched on her beehive hairstyle. Her formal dress and jacket is in the princess line style with its wide-cut velvet collar and three-quarter length sleeve, set off with the square-toed Cuban-heeled shoes trimmed with the Chanel logo. In the background can be seen the port broadside of the Danish Royal Yacht 'Dannebrog' (1931).
Americans on British cruises were sometimes viewed with much curiosity. Rosalia Chesterman, a social hostess on the Orient Line recalls her American passengers: ‘We were so intrigued by them and all those pills they used to take at breakfast.’
