On the upper surface, within a border of acanthus leaves, is engraved: 'This Tea Service is / Presented / to Capt. Thomas Freemen / OF THE SHIP / LADY KATHERINE BARHAM / BY HIS PASSENGERS / As a Token of their Esteem and Regard / for his unremitting and liberal attention to their comfort during / a long and tempestuous Voyage to Jamaica in 1836. / THE OWNERS OF THE VESSEL have united / in this Testimony / TO HIS EXEMPLARY CONDUCT.' On the base is engraved in cursive script: 'Mrs Ann Huggup / Mrs Elizabeth Bruce / Miss Bruce / Miss Agnes Bruce / Charles Grant Bruce Esq. / Alexander Bruce Esq. / John Down Esq. / Robert Duff Esq. / Robert Duff Esq.
