French naval ensign (1794-1814 and after 1830)
Ensign of the French frigate Guerrière, 40 guns. She was captured on 19 July 1806 by the Blanche, commanded by Captain Thomas Lavie. The Guerrière was one of four French vessels sent north to seize British whalers in March that year. One, the Néarque, was taken shortly after they left port. By the time the Guerrière surrendered to the British, her hull was foul and her crew badly affected by scurvy. The action off the Faroes lasted only forty-five minutes. The remaining two frigates returned to France having captured twenty-nine whalers or merchantmen. The hand-sewn flag is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist. The square hole in the centre was probably cut by souvenir hunters at an earlier date.
