Soup dish
Soup dish with the arms of the Lee family. Henry Gough's sister Isabella (1691-1767) married Eldred Lancelot Lee (1650-1734) in 1713. The soup plate has views of the City of London and Canton painted en grisaille on the rim separated by gilded floral panels. In the centre are the arms of Lee of Coton in Shropshire with Astley of Staffordshire, in polychrome enamels and gold - the family motto on a scroll below: 'VIRTUS VERA EST NOBILITAS' (virtue is the true nobility).
