An unidentified man standing with his back to a simultaneous triple explosion
An unidentified man standing with his back to a simultaneous triple explosion. These explosions were the idea of Captain Harry McKay, captain of the Terra Nova (1884), one of the two ships sent to rescue Scott and the Discovery (1901). The explosions caused the ice to crack (sometimes delayed action) so that it could be removed to float free, allowing the Terra Nova and Morning (1871) to get ever close to Discovery.
