The Deperdussin Monoplane No. 1378 on the trial runway on 'Aurora' (1913)
A view from the control top of HMS 'Aurora' (1913), a light cruiser, looking down on the forecastle deck. A trial runway has been constructed over the forward 6 inch gun with Deperdussin Monoplane No. 1378 tied down to the far end without its wings attached. 'Aurora' is at moorings off Harwich.
While the original date was recorded as 30 October, the Aurora's log book states that the runway was rigged on 25 October and the aeroplane embarked on 26 October. It was then removed and the runway disassembled on 28 October 1915 [TNA, ADM 53/34495]
Two small blemishes can be seen on the top right of the negative, with a faint line from top to bottom to the right of the runway.
