The Deperdussin Monoplane No. 1378 on the trial runway on board HMS 'Aurora' (1913)
The Deperdussin Monoplane No. 1378 on the trial runway constructed on the forecastle deck over the foreward 6 inch gun of HMS 'Aurora' (1913), a light cruiser. The photographer was standing by the stem (in the bows) looking aft towards the bridge and control top. A number of sailors and officers are working either side of the runway.
The Deperdussin was successfully flown from 'Aurora' on 4 November 1915 by Flight Lieutenant R J J Hope-Vere. According to her ship's log Aurora carried out aeroplane experiments in the morning of 4 November 1915.
The negative has a small water mark at the bottom, and a flaw to the right of the mast, which is faint when printed.
