A crowded quarterdeck during mine laying trials on board HMS 'Aurora' (1913)
A crowded starboard side of the quarterdeck on the light cruiser HMS 'Aurora' (1913) after she had been fitted as a minelayer. The crew and some officers are watching the mine laying trials using test mines that are numbered and can be swept. The photographer was sitting on the roof of the after 6 inch gun shield.
Aurora arrived at Hull and entered King George Lock on 21 October 1917 where she was refitted as a minelayer. She was moved out of the dock on 10 December into the basin. Aurora left Hull for Immingham on 16 December 1917 and finally arrived back in Harwich in the evening of 17 December. The log does not record specific mine laying trials for the rest of December. [Ship's Log, TNA, ADM 53/34496]
The negative has a curved blemish just off the centre and is a little grainy.
