Epaulettes worn by admiral Sir Francis Leopold McClintock, KCB (1819-1907). The 1856 regulations for epaulettes for the rank of admiral remain unchanged from 1846. They feature a crown above a base metal crossed sword and baton above three stars embroidered in silver thread, purl and spangles. The epaulettes themselves are of gold lace over sheet metal. The crescent is a wood core with gold purl and thread twisted around it to create the alternating effect of dull and bright bullions. There are 21 large and 20 small gold bullions on each epaulette. On the underside of the epaulettes, the strap is lined with black leather which the crescent is padded and lined with blue silk. There are brass clips to attach them to the shoulders and on each is the stamp "Landon & Co/7 New Burlington Street" with indications as to which is the left and right.
