A cadet posing on the quarterdeck of HMS 'Aurora' (1913)
A cadet on the starboard side of the quarterdeck of the light cruiser HMS 'Aurora' (1913) posing for a camera out of the frame. (N22899 taken about the same time shows Acting Assistant Paymaster R. R. Wallace with a camera and the same cadet). Next to him is the ready-use ammunition racks. The cadet is standing with his chest puffed out and his hands astride his hips. In the background is the dockside of Basin No. 2 at Chatham Dockyard.
While at Chatham Dockyard between 27 April and 16 May 1917 Aurora was refitted, which included mine laying gear. Mines were embarked on 13 May and the gear tested. [Ship's log, TNA, ADM 53/34496]
The cadet has been identified as 'Buttelstone' or 'George Crossmith', but neither surnames feature in the Navy List when he would be expected to have had a promotion to sub-lieutenant or lieutenant.
