Bow of the light cruiser HMS 'Penelope' (1914) underway in the North Sea.

A distant starboard bow view of the light cruiser HMS 'Penelope' (1914) underway off HMS 'Aurora's' port quarter. Behind her is an unidentified cruiser. The photographer was standing on the port quarter of the light cruiser 'Aurora' (1913) near the stern fairlead looking aft. The propeller wash can be seen in the foreground.

Aurora was at sea in company with Arethusa and others on 3 January 1916. She then steamed to Chatham via Sheerness on 6 January 1916 where she entered No. 5 Dock on 12 January. She undocked on 20 January and returned to Harwich on 21st. Aurora did a final patrol from the afternoon of 28 January to 1215am on 30 January, where she hit a Dutch trawler and carried away its bowsprit. [Ship's log: TNA, ADM 53/34495]

The negative has an uneven water-mark(?) pattern on it possibly from the developing process.
