Tablecloth

Yellow silk tablecloth commemorating the battle of Jutland. It has a border of ribbon woven with metallic thread and a fringe of bobbles . Embroidered in the centre are the flags of Great Britain and her allies during the First World War - the White Ensign and the flags of Belgium, Italy, France, Russia and Serbia surrounding the inscription: ‘PRESENT FROM MALTA / 31 MAY 1916 / MEMORY OF THE WAR.’ Inside a floral border round the edge are profiles of eight warships captioned: 'QUEEN MARY', INDEFATIGABLE', 'TRUBULANT' [sic] 'WARRIOR', 'BLACK PRINCE', 'DEFENCE', 'TIPPERARY' and 'INVINCIBLE' (all sunk at Jutland). 'Invincible' and 'Defence' wear the command flags of rear-admirals; ratings and marines are shown manning the rails. The embroidery is in satin stitch and couching, decorated with sequins.
