A view aft looking towards the stern wave at 24 knots.

A view from the top of the after 6 inch gun's gun shield looking aft over the stern of the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913). In the distance is a bow view of an unidentified cruiser following in her wake. On the horizon below the low-lying cloud are other warships, some making smoke.

Directly below the photographer can be seen a Carley Float secured to the deck below the 6 inch gun barrel. Beyond the float the towing cables are laid prepared on the deck lashed to the bollards. One officer is standing near the port side depth charge looking over the stern at the wash created by the cruiser steaming at 24 knots in shallow water. The other officer (possibly a Commander, so may be K. B. Toms) with three sailors are inspecting a float(?) lashed between the starboard bollards and the covered cordage roll.

Aurora's log records them leaving Harwich 6am on 21 October before briefly putting back into Harwich in the afternoon and then conducting a night patrol into 22 October. [Ship's log, ADM 53/34496].

The negative is slightly overexposed with some scratches.
