The stokers' of the Harwich Force racing whalers off Parkeston Quay.
A view from the light cruiser HMS Aurora (1913) looking across the river Stour towards Parkeston Quay with submarines and destroyers moored alongside or at moorings just off the quay. In the foreground are 14 ships' whalers racing down river crewed by stokers. The whalers are being followed by steam pinnaces and steam launches. On the far left and far right are two destroyer flotilla leaders at moorings.
On 21 September Aurora's log records that it was the light cruiser's pulling regatta, starting at 9am. Leave was granted to the second part of the starboard watch from 1pm to 7pm and the pulling regatta continued in the afternoon. [Ship's log, TNA, ADM 53/34496].
