Chinese passengers on the aft well deck and poop on board an unidentified passenger/cargo ship in Chinese coastal waters
Chinese passengers thronging the aft well deck of an unidentified passenger/cargo ship on a coastal or river voyage in Chinese waters. They include complete families of women and children and have brought their luggage and trappings with them. Awnings have been rigged over the after hatch and the poop. Two of the passengers have umbrellas, one has a bamboo parasol and a few are holding fans. The photographer was a serving Royal Navy officer and his ship was in Chinese waters from 6 May 1937 to 12 September 1938.
