Patch box
Oval patch box commemorating the Peace of Amiens, 1801. The surface is enamelled with a white base, pink sides and lid with a black painted inscription: 'In Peace rejoice, AND WAR no more' within a border of white dots. There is a mirror inside the lid. These boxes became fashionable during the 1780s, although it is unlikely that they were commonly used to hold patches. Most were probably collected as small ornaments and put on display within the home.
