Patch box
Oval patch box with a mirror inside the lid, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) and the battle of the Nile, 1798. The surface is enamelled, the base and sides pale blue. The lid with a tinted transfer of a winged figure representing Victory holding a cross in one hand and a portrait medallion in the other. Behind her is a pyramid and to one side, a palm tree, lion and harp. The scene is inscribed: 'Nothing can oppose Virtue & Courage', 'Victory of the Nile Augt 1 1798'.
