Patch box

Oval enamel patch box wih a hinged lid, with a polychrome transfer, after a Rodney Shackell drawing, depicting the Spanish Armada, 1588. The battle scene has a rope twist border and is flanked by naval trophies. On a ribbon scroll below: 'THE ARMADA'. The coat of arms of Elizabeth I is on the base inside. Inscribed inside the lid: 'In July 1588, under the command of Lord Howard, the English fleet successfully challenged the mighty Armada sent by Philip II of Spain to help his army invade England. The Spanish were routed in the Channel, and attacked with fireships off Calais: many ships were wrecked by storms as they sailed home round Scotland and Ireland.' The base is coloured green with the maker's name and the year of manufacture, 'MARITIME ENGLAND. MADE IN BILSTON IN THE YEAR 1982.' Contained in a blue velvet-lined box.
