Launching casket

Launching casket HMS Royal Albert 1854. A blue leather-covered case lined with blue velvet, containing a mallet, chisel and silver plaque. The tools are made of 'Victory' oak, with silver mountings chased with an oak leaf and acorn pattern. Underneath the top tray in the bottom of the box are five napkins giving the dimensions of the 'Royal Albert'. Also a copy of a letter from A. C. Tate, Portsmouth Dockyard acknowledging receipt of the casket.
HMS 'Royal Albert' was launched by Queen Victoria at Woolwich on 13th May 1854. The ship was commenced August 1842, as a sailing first rate, but was completed as a screw steamship of 3,726 tons, 500hp and 121 guns. After serving as flagship in the Mediterranean Fleet to Rear Admiral Edmund Lyons, and later in the Channel Squadron, she was sold in 1884 and broken up at Charlton.
