Launching casket
Launching casket of HMS 'Montagu' 1901. An oak box wih a hinged lid which is carved with acanthus leaves and the name 'Montagu' in twiggy lettering. The sides of the box are carved with roses and foliage. The casket is lined with pleated blue satin and contains a boxwood mallet carvet wih ivy and oak leaves and a silver-bladed chisel. The box also holds an invitation to the launch. Inside the lid is a picture of the ship inscribed: 'HMS Montagu. 1st class battleship, Designed by Sir W.H. White K.C.B., F.R.S. launched by Lady Charles T.D.M. Scott at Devonport Dockyard, 5th March 1901. Rear Admiral T.S. Jackson, Admiral Superintendent, H.R. Champness Esq. R.C.N.C. Chief Constructor. Length between perp. 405' 0. Breadth extreme 756'. Displacement in tons 14, 000. Draught for'ard 26'0. Aft 27', speed 19 knots, indicated horse power 1800.'
