A British sailor/ 'Jack Tar'
Painted lead caricature statuette on a round base depicting a British 'Jack Tar' , possibly modelled from a printed caricature by George Murgatroyd Woodward (1760?-1809), a lesser-known contemporary of Rowlandson and Gillray with a characteristically vigorous but rather cruder style.
The figure stands facing forward with its arms folded, wearing a black or blue short jacket, white loose trousers, a black hat cocked back askew, red scarf or kerchief knotted round the neck and with the hair in a pigtail. Doorstops of this design were manufactured by Jacques of London around 1853, although this example may be a copy. It was presented by W. W. Burr in July 1937.
