Portrait plaque

Portrait plaque depicting Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). A pink wax relief plaque of Nelson in uniform and full left profile. It is mounted on a brown glass background with a gilt surround to the glass cover. The whole is set in a rectangular wooden mount, painted black. The artist's signature 'C. Andras 1805' is incised under the shoulder. The back of the frame has an old handwritten label 'Portrait of Lord Nelson for which His Lordship sat to Miss Andras, modeller in wax to Her Majesty 87 Pall-Mall'. Nelson had sittings for Miss Andras in 1800 and again during his last leave August-September 1805. Catherine's uncle, the painter Robert Bowyer, had sittings at the same time. These waxes were produced in some quantity from a mould of the original.
