Wine coaster

One of a pair of wine coasters (bottle or decanter stands for use on the table) commemorating the voyages of Captain James Cook (1728-79).

Silver-gilt circular coaster, the inside engraved with a map of the Western Hemishere showing Cook's track (PLT0031 shows the Eastern Hemisphere). Inside the rim is the crest of the Bridge family: ‘a chaplet of oak or, between two wings elevated sable, each charged with a bridge of one arch, embattled and at each end a tower proper' and the motto 'LIBERTAS'. The outside is engraved with the twelve signs of the zodiac. The coaster is mounted on a wooden base with green baize at the bottom.

For two hundred years the coasters were owned by descendants of the silversmith John Bridge (1755-1834) of the firm of Rundell and Bridge, Court jewellers, Gold and Silversmiths, whose Partners included Paul Storr.
