Silver stauette

Statuette presented by HMS 'Lion' to HMS 'Indomitable'.

Silver statuette of Winged Victory sounding her trumpet, standing on a silver fluted trumpet-shaped column which is mounted on an ebonized wood base. On either side, mounted separately on the wood base, are seated silver lions. A silver plaque on the front of the plinth is inscribed: 'PRESENTED BY THE CAPTAIN AND OFFICERS OF H.M.S. LION TO THE CAPTAIN AND OFFICERS OF H.M.S. INDOMITABLE TO COMMEMORATE A VERY EXCELLENT 6 ½ INCH HAWSER JAN. 24-25 1915'.

HMS 'Indomitable' towed HMS 'Lion' back to Rosyth after she was disabled during the Dogger Bank action 24 January 1915. The Ward Room officers of HMS 'Indomitable' later presented the statuette to the Royal United Service Institute, from which it was acquired by the NMM in 1963. A smaller replica of the trophy was presented to Francis W. Kennedy, the Captain of the 'Indomitable', who later sold it privately
