HM Submarine H8 (1915) under way, approaching Harwich with mine damage to the starboard bow.

A distant starboard broadside view of HM Submarine H 8 (1915) under way, approaching Harwich with mine damage to the starboard bow. In the background are destroyers of the Harwich Force and the converted seaplane carrier HMS Vindex (1905).

H8 hit a mine while submerged off Ameland Gat, Terschelling. The mine hit the starboard
forward hydroplane and wrecked the hull forward of the torpedo room bulkhead. The starboard
torpedo tubes were destroyed and the hydroplanes and torpedo tubes bow doors were blown off. She returned to Harwich on the surface with the bow awash.
