The captured German mine-laying submarine UC 5 (1915) in dry dock at Harwich.
A starboard bow view of the captured German mine-laying submarine UC 5 (1915) in dry dock at Harwich. The photographer was standing on the floor of the dry dock looking up at the submarine and the crane. The lifting wires are attached to a mine stored in one of the tubes on the submarine prior to it being removed. The submarine is leaning against wooden supports projecting from the side of the dock and resting on keel chocks. Wires have been attached between the conning tower and dock side by block and tackle to keep her in position.
On the extreme right of the picture is part of a sea mine already removed from the submarine, sitting in its sinker mechanism.
