A general view of HM submarine D 3 (1910) and the captured German submarine UC 5 (1915) in the floating dry dock, Harwich.
A general view of the floating dry dock off Shotley, taken from the top of the dock wall. The dock holds the captured German mine-laying submarine UC 5 (1915) on the right (starboard quarter view), with HM submarine D 3 (1910) on the left (port side view). The bow of D 3 is out of the photograph. Note the 12 pounder anti-aircraft gun just forward of the conning tower. In the background is the stern of the training ship HMS Ganges II (ex HMS Minotaur, 1863), used during the war as Naval Operations Ship.
