The captured German submarine UC 5 (1915) and HM submarine D 3 (1910) in the floating dry dock off Shotley.
A view from the top of the floating dry dock wall at Shotley, looking at the starboard bow of the captured German mine-laying submarine UC 5 (1915). The gratings covering the six mine tubes are closed, except for tube three, where the gratings have been removed. Behind UC 5 is a port quarter view of HM submarine D 3 (1910) undergoing repairs. Note the 12 pounder anti-aircraft gun just forward of the conning tower. The top of the conning tower and the tip of the stern is out of the photograph. The external saddle ballast tanks are clearly visible.
