A middle-distant port broadside view of HM submarine E4 (1912) under tow leaving Harwich with damage to her casing and conning tower received in collision with HM submarine E41 on 15 August 1916. A few barges and small boats are at moorings or anchor in the background.

E4 and E41 collided while on exercise on 15 August 1916. All the crew of E4 were lost, including her commanding officer Lieutenant Commander J. Tenison. Both submarines was raised by the salvage ship Hughli (1894) on 18 August and later recommissioned into the navy.
