Wooden box

Wooden box, veneered with cross banded edges. It has brass hinges and a lock with ivory inlay round the keyhole. An oval painting on the lid, depicts an urn inscribed: 'L.M.' A weeping willow and a cutter are shown in the background. The box is lined with paper. Inside the lid is a coloured print on silk of a young naval officer, in a beaded gilt frame, glazed. On the print: 'J.J. Masquerier pinxt. Engraved and published by C. Turner, No. 10 Castle Street, East Cavendish Square, March 23rd 1799'.

A memorial to Captain Lewis Mortlock, wounded in action 3rd Jan 1799 and died 10th Jan aged 36 (see newspaper cuttings in REL0098). The owners of the box, kept sewing tools and memorabilia relating to Mortlock and other individuals in it.
