Boot jack
Bootjack belonging to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). A narrow board with a recess for the heel and a block to lift this off the floor on the back. The back of the item is carved twice with the inscription: 'Ld N' and this is also carved on the block. An attached label is inscribed in ink: 'Lord Nelson's boot jack (made by ship's carpenter of the Victory). Given to my later father Josiah Austin, Staff Surgeon RN by a brother officer (about 1886) as a genuine 'Nelson' relic. My father's writing appears above. This boot jack is much more bent on the left hand side than on the right, in such a way as would be caused by the continued use of the bootjack by a man supporting himself with the left arm, throwing his weight to the left side. H. Austin 8.1.08.''
