Wheel of the 'Princess Alice'
Wooden spoke from the ship's wheel of the Thames pleasure steamer, 'Princess Alice', run down and sunk in 1878 with massive loss of life in Blackwall Reach by the steamer 'Bywell Castle', while bringing trippers back from an excursion to Rosherville Gardens, Gravesend. The base of the wheel is mounted in silver as a desk ornament. It is inscribed: 'Part of the helm of the PRINCESS ALICE Excursion Steamer collided with the Bywell Castle off Northfleet Sept. 3rd 1878, 640 lives lost'. The silver mount is hallmarked 1906/7.
